As you have probably gathered by now yoga is an immense subject and it’s benefits go far beyond the physical. As I said before your body is effected very much by your thoughts and more intensely by your feelings which obviously has a knock-on effect on your life. Everything is connected – there is no getting away from that. So how can you use yoga even more effectively once you know that? Well once you know what a posture is good for, you can put it to even more good use while you are in it – double bubble!
Forward Bends are a favourite of mine – I just love the way they make me feel. For some reason I feel very much at home hanging down in a Forward Bend! On a more “metaphysical” level forward bends are great for relieving anxiety. These days, when there seems to be so much more stress around (especially in the workplace) it’s nice to know you can get some relief in your yoga practice and the great thing about a Forward Bend is that it can be done almost anywhere too. You may get some strange looks if you decide to go ahead in the middle of the main street but you know what I mean!
Once in a Forward Bend, just let go and relax into it, take a few slow, deep breaths and allow the blood to flow into the head, washing out all the stuck energy and refreshing your mind. You may find you can take stock of your life or get some new ideas! The reason for this is that this posture affects the subconscious mind so it is a really good idea do say positive affirmations to yourself while your head hangs low! It could be simply “I am calm and relaxed” or something more personal to you.
Take care however if you have high blood pressure, you can still bend forward from the hips but keep your head up higher so not too much blood flushes into the head.
